The Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office is a government entity that investigates unexpected and unexplained deaths, conducts or orders investigations into the manner or cause of death, and investigates or confirms the identity of an unknown person who has been found deceased, including certification of death related to mass disasters. In 2016, construction of a new Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office took place. The new facility features a single story ±19,000 square foot building designed to accommodate staff administration, case intake, medical examiners services, outdoor training area and portable mass disaster/casualty storage areas. The building’s location off of Wells Avenue and 9th Street in Reno was selected due to its proximity to the existing Washoe County Complex and easy access to I-80. The facility serves as the main Medical Examiner’s Office for the greater region, serving northern Nevada and portions of eastern California. CFA teamed with Van Woert Bigotti Architects, Black Eagle Consulting, PK Electrical, on the design and provided land use planning, civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture services. The building was completed and opened in January 2017.
